Your smartphone is a radio?

That's right. I'm not talking about listening to your favorite radio station on the Tunein or iHeartRadio apps. Believe it or not, most smartphones contain an FM radio chip inside. There's even an app for that. Its called NextRadio. Most smartphone makers, (aside from Apple, Google & a few others) have put the chip into their phones. There are more phones out there that are equipped with FM, that those that don't offer it.

Oops. Shhh. I forgot to mention that this is something the major cell carriers don't want you to know about. They make money from the data you consume by using the other app to hear your local radio station. Some have gone as far as disabling the FM function in your phone...Especially, if your under a contract.

I'm mentioning this because, recently, the new FCC Chairman (Ajit Pai) wants all smartphone owners to be able to use the FM chip for their smartphone radio listening.

You can bet that the cell carriers are lobbying heavily to make sure this doesn't happen.

This is something we'll have to keep an eye on.
