DX is the abbreviation for the word "Distance", and comes from the telegraph days.  DXing means to listen to distant radio or television stations.  Have you ever noticed that you can hear many more AM station at night?  That's DX.  I'll talk about AM in another post.  FM, however, is more stable.  While it doesn't change every night, FM does have chances for DX.  From about early June, until the end of July, in the northern he...

I've taken some time off for the summer.  I know...That's not something normal bloggers do.  But, I've never been accused of being normal.  I want to clue you in on some upcoming gems, here in my radio blog.  Beginning in October, I'll start blogging about stations that came be heard from Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.  Amongst the corporate sameness, there are some pretty special signals to be found.  Keep an eye out for that.  Also...

Every summer the upper atmosphere makes it possible for distant FM stations to barge in on your favorite stations.  These stations that only come in over your usual faves, are most likely from a great distance away.  Some, as much as 1,200 miles.  This happens near the summer solstice.  Sometimes these signals are so strong, they can overpower local stations.  However, these signals will fade very quickly, and even may go in a...

Yes.  I am excited.  After 50 days of Spring Training, the Major League Baseball season opens today.  I'm not going to hold back the fact that I am a huge Chicago Cubs fan.  I'm also tagging this "Radio" because, truly the next best thing to being at the ballpark, is listening to the game on the radio.  If the play-by-play announcer is good at his craft, (and Pat Hughes) is) your mind can be transported right onto the field....

Spring is certainly here.  Spring is also the usual start of the stormy season around here.  Believe it, or not, storms can help radio reception.  Especially on FM.  I've noticed that sometimes, when storms are nearby, they affect FM radio reception.  Since storms introduce very little static to FM, they can sometimes even improve reception of some stations that may normally be hard to hear.  The opposite may also happen.  So,...

Today, I was in heaven.  The weather was sunny...& I had baseball on the radio.  Yes.  It was only Spring Training, but that first taste of baseball on the radio, is like the first robin.  I mentioned in an earlier post, that baseball on the radio, is one of my fondest childhood memories.  I'll save the real reminiscing for Opening Day.  For now, I'm so happy for America's Pastime preseason to be underway....

That's right.  I'm not talking about listening to your favorite radio station on the Tunein or iHeartRadio apps.  Believe it or not, most smartphones contain an FM radio chip inside.  There's even an app for that.  Its called NextRadio.  Most smartphone makers, (aside from Apple, Google & a few others) have put the chip into their phones.  There are more phones out there that are equipped with FM, that those tha...

Yesterday, I mentioned how I became interested in weather.  Today, I'll do the same for Radio.

When I was a young boy, we were firmly entrenched in the color television era.  I can still remember the Curtis Mathes color console in our small living room.  It was more like a piece of furniture.  More vivid, are the memories of Mom singing along when her favorite Motown songs would come on the kitchen radio.  Or, the football & ba...

Over the years, I have learned that a great AM/FM radio is hard to find.  Sure, car sound systems usually have a decent receiver.  However, most home audio systems have ditched the tuner entirely.  The majority of today's boomboxes have terribly performing radio sections.

Of late, my search for a good AM/FM radio has brought me to several portables that also receive shortwave bands.  Most have good AM & FM rece...
